A smartphone in a drone: PhoneDrone

Drones are a daily subject of many blogs and other media these days. We can’t neglect the fact that these flying robots are becoming a big part of our world. As tech-savvy users, we only see the positive sides on this cool development in this digital era and look forward to all the innovative ideas that will become reality.

And with this trend, small companies pop out of the ground like mushrooms, inventing robots that can fly. We found an interesting drone on kickstarter: PhoneDrone. Not really a cool name, we know, but you can already guess what this little guy can do. The creators, xCraft, are not new to the drone world. They recently made another Drone, the X PlusOne, which was a huge success on Kickstarter.

Their newest member of the family, the PhoneDrone, literally lets your smartphone fly. You simply put your smartphone, with the installed app, in the body and hup, there it goes. You can either let the drone fly autonomously or pair it with a second device, with which you can control the drone instantly.

But why is it such a big deal? Why would you even buy something that puts your beloved smartphone up in the air?

xCrafts says it is just much easier to share your content because you have your files already on your smartphone. No transferring necessary. But what about cloud services that could easily make the Phone Drone superfluous? What is the added value of this new drone? Two words: live streaming.

Do you remember the hype about Meerkat and Periscope from a couple of weeks ago? Yes? Alright then! Think about how cool it would be to live stream your favorite moments from the air. That would be really next level ( do you get it ). Think about how brands could use this during festivals, like Tomorrowland for instance. The possibilities are endless.

As you can see in the video, the PhoneDrone isn’t that big, perfect to take it along in your backpack or purse. The device also warns you when the battery is running low, which comes in handy when you don’t want to lose your precious smartphone.

A downside? You need to have two smartphones! But that’s a minor detail, right? No seriously. When you buy the PhoneDrone you must realize that you’ll need a second, good working smartphone. Oof..

To conclude, it’s obvious that drones are going to be pretty important in the advertising and communication business. So if you want to become the next Periscope or Meerkat influencers, back this project and enjoy some great technology along with the rest of the world.
