Step Aside Google Glass! Here Is How To Turn Your Smartwatch Into a Spy Camera

The release of the augmented-reality device Google Glass, now available through the company’s Explorer program, has brought to light the concerns that it could be used for recording people without them knowing it. Granted, this is obviously not the only device where this activity can take place, given that virtually every smartphone now in existence includes multiple cameras. However, despite the red warning light that shows when the glasses are recording, it can still be much easier to record someone surreptitiously with a device that sits right on your face.

As it turns out, Google Glass is not the only device that supplies this capability.. In fact, with the release of the free app, Wear Camera Remote, you can turn the combination of your smartphone and smartwatch into an extremely effective spycam.

The first step would be to make sure that you have the correct hardware to take advantage of this app. Wear Camera Remote can be used with any smartphone running the Android operating system version 4.1 and up. The smartwatch you want to use with it must also be running the Android Wear, which is Google’s new operating system for smartwatches.

Once you have this verified, the next step would be to download and install the app on your smartphone. Once the app has been downloaded and installed correctly on your smartphone, it will appear on your smartwatch and is ready for use.

Activating the recording function can be accomplished in a couple of ways. The first would be simply to speak the words “start camera” into your phone. Howsoever, if you are recording on the sly, you can kick of the recording using the smartphone itself. Simply swipe up from the “Speak Now” screen and locate the Start button at the bottom of the list that appears. Here you will find all of the commands you need to start and stop recording, and even take still pictures.

There are obvious privacy issues with an app of this nature, none of which I am suggesting you violate. However, there are plenty of ethical and moral activities that a capability like this could be invaluable for. In essence, just take ay situation where you want to record a completely candid moment, such as a marriage proposal. Knowing a camera is present always influences a person’s reaction. With a spycam like this, you can be sure to preserve true emotion for succeeding generations.
