Motorola has teased the Moto360 for months now. Google introduced 3 smartwatches during its Google I/O earlier this year, but it was the Moto360, with its circular design, that stole the show. There was audible disappointment in the crowd when it was mentioned that the Moto360 would not be released until the end of the summer. Since then, there has been a lot of chatter and, the most anticipation for the Moto360 than any other smartwatch this year (barring a new iWatch from Apple – which is not officially confirmed).
However, with all the fanfare for the circular watch face, LG seems to have “one-upped” Motorola this time by releasing its own circular faced smartwatch just a week before Motorola’s press event. A few days ago, LG started teasing people by posting a circular watch face on its YouTube channel. It was supposedly going to release a new smartwatch just a few months after it released the LG G watch.
LG officially revealed the G Watch R with a 1.3-inch OLED display that covers the full watch face – unlike the Moto360, which has an area of black space at the bottom of the display. This dead space houses the ambient light sensors and display drivers for the Moto360. It is not clear how LG managed to avoid this problem with its G Watch R.
The G Watch R has similar specs to the original G Watch that was released during Google I/O this year. It packs a slightly better battery rated at 410mAh (which is 10mAh better than the original G Watch) and, features a heart rate monitor that was absent in the original G watch. The other specs are identical with a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 CPU, 512MB of RAM, 4GB storage and regular 22mm interchangeable straps. It is also water resistant (rated at IP67).
There is no official word on pricing yet, but LG says the watch will go on sale in early Q4 2014.
